Man arrested, assault rifle seized in raid on Santa Rosa home

An AK-47 assault rifle was seized Thursday from a Santa Rosa home and its suspected owner arrested, authorities said Friday.

Information that a suspected gang member and convicted felon might have a high-powered assault rifle came from an investigation by the Sonoma County Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Team, said Sheriff's Lt. Tim Duke said. The team, also known as MAGNET, runs out of the Sheriff's Office and is comprised of deputy sheriffs, CHP officers and probation officers.

They obtained a search warrant and, with help from the Sonoma County sheriff's SWAT Team and canine units, executed it Thursday evening at Felix Fernando Carreon, 38, home in the 1500 block of Shelley Drive in Santa Rosa.

Officers discovered the assault rifle in the engine compartment of a vehicle parked in the residence's driveway, Duke said.

Several rounds of ammunition for a second firearm were located in one of the bedrooms of the home, but a second firearm was not found, Duke said. Officers also found several pounds of marijuana and other items that indicated the sale of illegal drugs.

They arrested Carreon on charges of being a felon in possession of ammunition. His bail was set at $20,000.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges related to the assault rifle and drugs are pending, Duke said.
