Curating your art and wine

Do you prefer your wine "curated"?

Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley in Yountville is a wine tasting collective, but it's also an art and design gallery, and here the wine educator serves as a curator of sorts.

"The wine educator finds out what individual tasters like before setting up 'curated, customized flights' just for them," explained Daniel Orrison, the director of the gallery.

The tasting room collective represents 23 boutique producers, and some of the high-brow, prestigious brands include Capture Wines, TOR Kenwood and Lail Vineyards.

The collective offers three different tasting flights: the Classic at $15; the Connoisseur, $25; and the Collector, $35. Each offers four, 2-ounce pours, and they're paired with artisanal cheese, fruit and nuts.

The flights can be prepared in a variety of ways — by varietal, by producer, etc. — and the wine educator also hosts the tasting.

"The whole customized experience has been wonderfully received," Orrison said.

In addition to offering a range of bottlings, Ma(i)sonry also showcases a revolving group of artists with something new to see almost every day. There also are six themed exhibits throughout the year, and plenty to peruse from paintings to sculptures to eclectic furniture, as well as a sculpture garden outside.

For history buffs, the stone, craftsman-style building with its gable roof is a treat and a great backdrop for tasting. In addition to its National Register of Historic Places status, Ma(i)sonry is listed on the Napa County Historic Resources Inventory. For the curious, the parentheses in the name reflect a play on the French word for "home" and the English word "masonry."
