Saturday's Letters to the Editor

Bodega Bay fire

EDITOR: Bev Burton ("No Bodega fire tax," Letters, Feb. 22) made some valid points about recommendations to consolidate fire districts. What she failed to mention is that she is a constituent of the past Bodega Bay fire board that failed to follow through with efforts such as sharing a fire chief and administration of the Bodega Bay and Russian River districts.

Additionally, the county's emergency services department approached the fire board about a merger or contracting of services, and the board publicly chastised the county fire chief for even mentioning it.

The past fire board dug a hole for the current one. There are only two options for the folks of Bodega Bay: Vote for Measure A or reduce services and cut three of the nine employees.

Burton also mentioned that the past board failed to contain costs. The staff has shouldered the load by not asking for pay increases and paying increased percentages of retirement and health benefits.

Between the county hoarding money brought in by tourism, limitations on post-Proposition 13 agencies and a group of folks who fight any development, public services are strained in Bodega Bay.

Time is needed to let the new fire board work. A lot of changes in fire services are happening countywide that will open doors for more sustainable service.
