Cloverdale traffic stop leads to pot bust

Two men pulled over by the CHP for speeding were arrested Tuesday after police found 16 pounds of marijuana in their car, CHP Officer Jonathan Sloat said in a written statement.

An officer patrolling southbound Highway 101 near Dutcher Creek Road in Cloverdale stopped a 2005 Scion for speeding at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sloat said.

The driver and passenger told the officer they were headed from Humboldt County to New Mexico, where they live, Sloat said.

While talking to the men, the officer smelled marijuana in the car, Sloat said. He searched the vehicle and found about 16 pounds of packaged marijuana, Sloat said.

The driver, Patrick Cadieux, 23, and James Donning, 32, were booked on suspicion of possession and transportation of marijuana for sale.
