Lake Sonoma-area grass fire highlights danger

A small grass fire near Lake Sonoma that was likely triggered by a vineyard burn pile was extinguished by firefighters Tuesday evening.

The fire on Rockpile Road was reported around 6:20 p.m. and charred about an acre of vegetation before firefighters brought it under control, said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Curtis Brown.

The owner of a small vineyard was burning a pile of debris in the area and a gust of wind appears to have helped the fire escape, Brown said.

"A lot of people think green grass won't burn, but it will," Brown said. "There's dry grass in there, too."

In addition to Cal Fire, units from Geyserville, Healdsburg and Cloverdale fire departments assisted.
