A Fort Bragg man was arrested following a suspected domestic violence incident during which a woman was shot in the hand, Fort Bragg police reported Tuesday.
Billy R. Doak, 41, was booked into the Mendocino County jail Monday on suspicion of domestic battery and possession of firearms. Doak is prohibited from having firearms because he has a domestic violence-related restraining order filed against him in connection with a prior relationship, police said.
The shooting incident was reported after a 39-year-old woman went to the coast hospital for treatment, police said.
It initially was reported as an accident, but neighbors said they heard an argument prior to the gun being fired, police said.
Police officers served a warrant on the North Main Street home and several vehicles. They reported finding handguns, rifles and ammunition during the searches.
Two children who were at the home when the shooting occurred were taken into protective custody and released to Child Protective Services, officials said.
The woman was transported to an out-of-town hospital for surgery to repair a finger, police said.
