The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors once more has delayed a decision on allowing a new recycling operation at the county landfill west of Cotati.
After hearing a second day of public testimony Tuesday on the proposal by Republic Services, the supervisors postponed a possible vote until April 22, saying they needed more time to digest the extensive comments received this week and at a previous hearing in January.
Republic proposes to install a recycling and sorting facility inside the transfer station at the county landfill on Meacham Road. The operation would allow the company to sort and shred a variety of material for reuse, including construction debris, wood, cardboard and some home refuse.
Critics, however, say the facility would generate too much noise and odor, contaminate storm runoff and create a fire risk from dust and debris. They are urging supervisors to reject the plan, or at least subject it to more rigorous environmental review.
