Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Balletto, Ros?of Pinot Noir, 2013 Russian River Valley, 13 percent alcohol, $18. Aromas and flavors of cherry, lime and spice, with a hint of mineral. Bright and lively.

Long Meadow Ranch, 2013 Rutherford, Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 12.9 percent, $20. A gorgeous sauvignon blanc with a range of flavors — grapefruit, lemon, grass and a hint of jalapeno. A refreshing pineapple finish. Lovely.

Terre Rouge, 2009 Sierra Foothills Roussanne, 14.5 percent, $25. Rich and full-bodied with aromas and flavors of quince and honey. It has a lush texture, and yet it's balanced. Lingering finish. A standout.

Guenoc, 2008 Serpentine Meadow, Guenoc Valley Petite Sirah Port, 18.8percent, $25. A port with intensity. Notes of rich, dense black fruit, cracked black pepper and a hint of vanilla.

Adelaida, 2012 Anna's Estate Vineyard, Paso Robles, 14.5 percent, $50. A striking Rhone white blend with aromas and flavors of white flowers, citrus and honey. This blend is 70 percent roussanne, 25 percent grenache and 5 percent picpoul blanc. A knockout.
