Monday's Letters to the Editor

The right balance

EDITOR: With many lawmakers unable to solve problems across party lines, citizens seldom see that we make much impact in Sacramento. But this June, we in the 2nd Assembly District can send a representative who knows how to bring dollars home to our region. As we choose a successor to Wes Chesbro, I write to recommend a vote for John Lowry.

Lowry's experience includes his background as executive director at Burbank Housing, responsible for 113 employees and assets of $435 million. In that role, he developed thousands of homes affordable to working families. He has worked extensively with local governments, neighborhoods, labor, utilities, suppliers and infrastructure providers — and with Sacramento to secure the funds needed to help.

Lowry supports the progressive proposal by Mayor Chuck Reid of San Jose that would reduce California's future long-term pension costs while honoring existing commitments. He is well-known and respected by change advocates and business leaders, builders and preservationists. I have been looking for someone who will strike the balance that we need, and John Lowry is that person.

Let Carrillo stay

EDITOR: Efren Carrillo was elected to serve the citizens of his district. He was not elected to be a hero or paragon of virtue. His recent behavior has caused us anguish and embarrassment. Still, he has proven to be an effective public servant in many regards. Let us see if he can continue to fulfill those duties. Until the time that his personal demons prevent that, let us cautiously proceed with him.
