Fort Bragg man held in child abuse case

A Fort Bragg man remained in jail Thursday morning on suspicion of child abuse and endangerment.

Zachary Bair, 28, was arrested Tuesday after he and the child's mother took the infant to the hospital for treatment of its injuries, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's authorities did not divulge the extent of the injuries, the child's age or gender.

The child's mother told medical staff that the baby had been dropped accidentally 24 hours before, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Medical personnel determined the child's injuries were not consistent with the mother's statements and phoned law enforcement and child protective services.

Investigators determined that Bair had struck the child, unbeknownst to its mother.

Bair was arrested and was being held on $25,000 bail. He was expected to be released on bail Thursday afternoon.

The child was taken into custody by child protective services.
