Firefighters battled flames and strong winds before extinguishing a house fire Saturday afternoon southwest of Sebastopol.
The fire caused significant damage to the single-story home on Olsen Road near Barnett Valley Road.
Gold Ridge firefighters responded to the blaze at 2:16 p.m. The agency sent five engines and received help from Cal Fire and the Sebastopol and Occidental fire departments.
When firefighters arrived, flames already were coming out of the roof. Strong winds fanned the blaze and pushed it toward firefighters.
"We were really fighting it for a little bit," said Brett Irons, a Gold Ridge engineer.
Workers from Pacific Gas & Electric assisted by cutting off power to a downed line that served the house.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Most of the home suffered damage from the smoke or flames.
