Lake County Sheriff's detectives and the District Attorney's Office are investigating the death of a male inmate whose body was found Saturday at the county jail.

The inmate was discovered about 9:05 a.m. by an officer making routine cell checks at the correctional facility on Helbush Drive in Lakeport.

"The officer noticed something was wrong with the inmate and contacted medical staff," according to a Sheriff's Office news release. The inmate "was not breathing and did not have any vital signs."

Medical and correctional staff began CPR and were later assisted by rescue personnel from the Lakeport Fire Department. The lifesaving efforts were halted about 9:30 a.m.

Sheriff's officials did not release the man's name or age.

"The inmate was housed alone and foul play does not appear to be a factor in the cause of death," the press release stated.

Both the detectives and the District Attorney's Office will conduct parallel investigations into the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding it, according to the news release. An autopsy is expected to be performed early next week.
