Wine list

Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies.)

Cline, 2012 Ancient Vines Carignane, Contra Costa County, 15.5 percent alcohol, $16. A complex carignane with notes of dark berries, plum and chocolate. A steal for the price.

St. Gregory, 2010 Mendocino County Pinot Noir, 13.5 percent, $19. A standout with layered flavors of bright cherry and toast. Nice acidity. Balanced. Juicy. A tasty value.

Kale, 2013 Napa Valley Ros? 12.9 percent, $22. A dry ros?with bright fruit. Notes of cherry, raspberry and mineral. Seamless texture. Crisp finish. Lovely.

Ramey, 2011 Russian River Valley Chardonnay, 14.5 percent, $40. A lush chardonnay with depth. Notes of apple, pear and cr?e brulee. Lingering finish. Knockout.

La Crema, 2012 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, 14.5 percent, $50. A lovely, floral pinot noir with aromas and flavors of cherry, blueberry and tea. Layered flavors. Nice length.
