Lake County health authorities have shut down a Lake County preschool and given preventive antibiotics to 61 children and adults after one student was diagnosed with a meningococcal infection.

The child was diagnosed Sunday while out of town, health officials said. The school, the Pomo Early Connection preschool, was shut down on Monday after local authorities were notified, according to health officials.

The school is expected to reopen today after being disinfected, officials said.

Meningococcal infections can cause serious infections, including meningitis, officials said. Symptoms include flu-like symptoms, fever, headache, rash and confusion. Not everyone infected with the bacteria becomes ill.
