Apprenticeship program serving lunch, brunch

Worth Our Weight, Evelyn Cheatham?s culinary apprentice program, has opened for lunch and brunch at its new location at 1021 Hahman Drive.

The cafe serves pastries and coffee from 9 to 11 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, followed by lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those days. The popular Worth Our Weight brunch is served from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays.

Cheatham is running the cafe as a community table, which means that patrons pay only what they want to pay. ?We went to donation because we really wanted to differentiate ourselves from being a restaurant,? she said.

The apprentice program teaches food service fundamentals to teens in a supportive, hands-on environment. In the future, Cheatham said she hopes to serve dinners as well to help out working families who are short on time.
