Good Samaritan fatally hit by car

A man who stopped to help another motorist died Wednesday after being hit by a passing vehicle in Contra Costa County.

The California Highway Patrol said the incident began around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday when an SUV crashed through a fence and went down an embankment south of Antioch.

The coroner's office identified the victim as 56-year-old William Tindall Jr. of Clayton.

The accident occurred on Marsh Creek Road, which is used by commuters as a shortcut between Concord and Brentwood.
