A Guerneville man who allegedly hitched a ride and stabbed the driver as they traveled along River Road was in jail Sunday, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said.
After the stabbing, the man tried to rob a man of a cellphone in the Sebastopol Whole Foods market's parking lot, Sebastopol police said.
Sheriff's Lt. Glenn Lawrence said Aaron Anthony Barbee, 30, was hitchhiking in Guerneville at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday when driver Ricardo Archuleta, 33, stopped to give him a ride.
Archuleta was headed toward Santa Rosa from Point Arena with his 8-year-old son.
"At some point during the ride (Barbee) pulled out a knife and started acting crazy," Lawrence said.
Archuleta was wounded twice, in the stomach and a small cut on his right thumb, Lawrence said.
He said Barbee also broke a window in the car. Near Mirabel Road, Archuleta stopped and Barbee got out.
Archuleta continued into western Santa Rosa where he stopped and phoned for help. He was treated for his injuries but was not admitted to the hospital, authorities said.
At 8:28 p.m., Sebastopol police received a 911 call about the attempted robbery outside of Whole Foods, Sebastopol Police Sgt. Mike Nielsen said.
He said officers found Barbee in the park across from the store and arrested him after the victim identified him and told officers Barbee punched him multiple times.
Barbee was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, being under the influence of drugs and violating his parole, Nielsen said.
Sheriff's detectives learned of Barbee's arrest and began investigating him in connection with the stabbing.
Lawrence said Barbee was identified as the hitchhiker and also was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and endangering a child.
