A man who fired a gun at a woman at a Ukiah motel after she caught him inside her car is now one of the county's most wanted suspects, Mendocino County sheriff's officials reported Tuesday.

The man fired two to three times but missed the woman, Mendocino Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Caudillo said. One bullet hit her car.

Detectives identified the attempted homicide suspect as Barquel Simon Ruiz, 26, said Caudillo.

Ruiz, described as an area transient, remained at large Tuesday afternoon and is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting took place at about 6 p.m. Saturday outside of the Discovery Inn.

The woman had gone to her car in the parking lot and found the man inside the vehicle. She grabbed him and began pulling him from the car.

They struggled and the man pulled out a small caliber handgun that had been tucked into his waistband, Caudillo said.

She said the man pointed the gun at her and fired repeatedly before running.

The woman, who wasn't identified, picked Ruiz as her assailant from a photo lineup.

At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a black beanie-style hat, black puffy jacket and black jeans.

Sheriff's officials said they will add him to the department's "most wanted" list. The list is posted on the sheriff's website at mendocinosheriff.com.

Sheriff's officials are asking for help in finding Ruiz. They asked anyone who sees him or knows of his location to phone deputies on the sheriff's tip line at 234-2100 or contact dispatchers at 463-4086.
