OCCIDENTAL: Learn to prune vines, fruit trees at workshop
Learn the best way to prune your fruit trees and vines during a free workshop Jan. 19 at the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center.
The workshop will cover the basics for small, diversified fruit tree orchards, starting with tools and tool safety and moving into the benefits of pruning, basics cuts and the art of pruning. The class will include a walk around the orchards at OAEC with a discussion of the different types of fruit trees and how to properly prune each one.
Examples include apples, European and Asian pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, cherries and grapes.

SANTA ROSA: Rose Society offering free pruning workshop
The Redwood Empire Rose Society will give a free hands-on demonstration on rose pruning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
Consulting rosarians will be on hand to answer questions. Refreshments will be served.

SONOMA: Learn to cure olives in free workshop
Olive expert Don Landis will show you how to cure your crop without lye during a free workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Cline Cellars in Sonoma.
Landis will share a history of the olive, as well as tips on when to pick. He will also demonstrate various debittering techniques, including a Greek-style brine cure, a water cure and a salt cure. It will end with a tasting of olives with cheese and crackers.
If the weather is nice, workshop-goers may explore the winery grounds and receive a discount in the tasting room.

SANTA ROSA: Free fruit-tree trimming workshop today
A proper nip and tuck here and there on your fruit trees will lead to a more abundant harvest later this year. And now is the time to trim.
