A hiker walking east of Fort Bragg found the remains of a body, potentially a person who was reported missing last year, Mendocino County sheriff's officials said Monday.
The hiker was near the California Pacific Railroad tracks, about two miles east of town, when he reported finding a skeleton at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday.
A deputy went to the site and confirmed the discovery, launching an investigation.
Detectives believe the skeleton could be that of a person who disappeared voluntarily in the last few months from Fort Bragg, Mendocino County sheriff's Lt. Greg Van Patten said.
He declined to release further details until a positive identification is made.
