A driver who ran a red light, led police on a high-speed chase through downtown Santa Rosa and then crashed early Saturday was arrested after a police dog found him hiding in vegetation, Santa Rosa police said.

Derrick Logan Dale, 27, of Santa Rosa was held on suspicion of reckless evading, driving under the influence, hit and run, driving without a valid license and resisting arrest, Sgt. John Cregan said.

The incident began at 12:04 a.m. when a Santa Rosa sergeant saw a blue Ford Fusion sedan with its headlights off drive through a red light at Third and E streets in excess of 50 mph.

The driver led patrol cars on a chase for about 1.5 miles at speeds over 70 mph, Cregan said.

The car went out of control on South A Street just south of Sebastopol Avenue, struck the west curb of South A Street and went through a chain link fence separating the street from Highway 101, colliding with the embankment along the freeway.

The driver fled up the embankment and hid in dense vegetation, Cregan said. He was located by a police dog.
