A crash Wednesday involving two vehicles, one moving and one parked on the shoulder of southbound Highway 101 in Marin County, resulted in major injuries for Point Reyes man.

Aaron Mudrich, 30, of Point Reyes, was a passenger in a Ford pickup stopped just south of the Redwood Landfill on the right-hand shoulder of the highway, according to the CHP.

He and the pickup's driver where trying to secure an item in the truck's bed when, about 2:20 p.m., a Freightliner box truck traveling south on the highway veered right off the roadway and slammed into the pickup's left front, rotating it and striking Mudrich, the CHP reported.

Moments before the crash, the Freightliner had been moving over into the fast lane to give a wide birth when a loud bang came from under the truck, causing it to veer hard to the right, the CHP said, based on reports by the driver and witnesses.

Following the collision, the pickup rolled onto the driver's side, causing minor injuries to its driver, Jared Sperry, 38, also of Point Reyes.

The Freightliner eventually stopped in a field on the west side of the highway.

Sperry and Mudrich were taken by ambulance to Marin General Hospital. An initial CHP report did not mention any injuries for the Freightliner driver, Javier Rodriguez, 30, of Alameda.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash. The slow lane of the highway was closed until about 3:45 p.m.
