The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is issuing this winter's 10th Spare the Air Alert for Saturday, banning burning of wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The alert was called because of a high pressure system across the Bay Area, which can cause air pollution levels to rise to unhealthy levels.

First-time violators will be allowed to take an awareness class, while second violations can result in a $500 citation.

The Winter Spare the Air season runs until Feb. 28.
