Flowers in bloom
EDITOR: Congratulations to all involved in the creation of the Hall of Flowers at this year's Sonoma County Fair. All of the entries are beautifully organized and arranged; it is the best I've seen in years.
Cruelty to animals
EDITOR: Once again we are subjected to pictures of children treating animals with a complete lack of care and respect. I refer to the photos of mutton bustin' and the pig scramble at the Sonoma County Fair. The children are too young to know better, but their parents and the organizers of this event are not.
Surely there is a higher purpose to Farmers' Day — perhaps to honor the importance of farmers and the incredibly hard and valuable work they do and the animals that help feed and clothe us, as well as to teach children to treat animals humanely. Instead we see young children riding and "wrestling" sheep and chasing greased piglets.
Since when are sheep used for riding? Is the purpose of a pig to be greased and chased by a horde of young children? Maybe the children are having a good time, but I think we can all agree that the animals are not. "Busting" means to break. What exactly is meant to be broken?
