Bodega woman arrested in shoplifting incident

A Bodega woman was arrested Tuesday and is suspected of shoplifting numerous items from a grocery store before driving her car into an employee who tried to stop her.

Juliet Smith, 52, is suspected of leaving Whole Foods Market in Sebastopol without paying for items, then returning to the store to take additional items without paying. She then re-entered the store a third time and paid for an item, police said.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and reckless driving after police say she intentionally struck an store employee who tried to speak with her about allegedly shoplifting items.

The employee sustained no injuries despite being struck three times, according to police. Smith fled the scene.

Police who responded to the incident were originally unable to locate Smith or her vehicle but eventually tracked Smith to her residence in Bodega where she was arrested.
