A 66-year-old man died Monday afternoon when his vehicle careened off Highway 101 in northern Mendocino County and collided with a tree, the CHP reported.

The man's name was not released because his family had not yet been notified, authorities said.

The crash occurred just north of the Highway 162 turnoff at 3:05 p.m., according to the CHP. The man was not wearing a seatbelt when his Ford sport utility vehicle left the road, traveled down an embankment and struck the tree, the CHP said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
