Fresh closes its doors, holds moving sale

Chef/owner Lisa Hemenway has closed the doors of Fresh restaurant at the Skyhawk Village Marketplace on Highway 12 in Santa Rosa, according to a sign posted on the front door.

"The time has come for Fresh to move from Skyhawk Village Marketplace," Hemenway wrote Monday night on Facebook. "We are negotiating a new location and will close our doors for business tonight."

In both postings, Hemenway thanked her customers for their support and announced a moving sale that will take place today, Thursday and Friday from noon to 6 p.m.

"We are planning to sell everything from food to equipment to decor," she wrote. "The new facility has all the equipment and accoutrements we need."

Hemenway opened Fresh in late September 2010 as a version of a French marketplace, with sit-down restaurant with a pizza oven and a bar, a deli for take-out, a bakery and espresso bar, and a market offering a selection of produce, meats, fish and dairy.

Hemenway has owned several well-known restaurants in Santa Rosa over the years, including Lisa Hemenway's Bistro at Montgomery Village and the Town & Country Shopping Center. She did not respond Tuesday to efforts to contact her.

The 7,800-square-foot space at 5755 Mountain Hawk Drive first opened in 2006 as the Skyhawk Village Market. Co-owner Mike Runyan closed the upscale grocery store in March 2010.


Chalkboard Bistro in old Cyrus space

Bill Foley has plans to open the former Cyrus restaurant in his Hotel Les Mars in Healdsburg as Chalkboard Bistro & Wine Bar this spring.

The new restaurant will showcase produce from the gardens at Chalk Hill Winery and feature small plates and tapas to share with wine tasting flights.

Shane McAnelly, former executive chef of Walnut Creek's Va de Vi bistro and wine bar, has been tapped to head up the kitchen.

The Michelin-starred Cyrus closed its doors in Oct. 2012, after a series of disputes between Foley and Cyrus co-owners Nick Peyton and Douglas Keane, who leased the space. Keane and Peyton walked away with the naming rights to re-open someplace else.

Foley owns numerous wineries throughout New Zealand, Washington state and California, including Chalk Hill Winery in Healdsburg and Sebastiani Vineyard and Winery in Sonoma.


Valentine's Day food, wine events

Restaurants and wineries will take aim at romance this month, helping Cupid's arrow hit its target on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. Here are a few of the festive events, bubbling over with wine and food:

Rodney Strong Vineyards will hold its annual Wine & Chocolate Fantasy from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Healdsburg winery. The event features artisan chocolates, wine and live music. $65. www.rodneystrong.com. 11455 Old Redwood Highway.

Spoonbar launches 'Forks & Corks'

Spoonbar in H2Hotel in Healdsburg has launched a new "Forks and Corks" series of collaborative dinners hosted by Executive Chef Louis Maldonado.

The dinners bring together top Bay Area toques with wine experts for thematic, six-course dinners providing a sensory experience for diners.

Chef Brett Cooper of Outerlands in San Francisco and sommelier Kevin Wardell of Bergamot Alley in Healdsburg will team up at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 for a "Where Land Meets Sea" dinner. $110.

Mall launches

regional dinners

Chef/owner Jeff Mall of Zin Restaurant & Wine Bar in Healdsburg has launched his Regional American Dinner Series to warm up winter Wednesday nights.

During the dinners, the chef features regional cuisine from all over the country and the world. The cost is $29 for a three-course, prix-fixe menu, or $39 with two wine pairings.

Tonight, diners will be whisked off to the comfort zone of the Alsace-Lorraine with a traditional Alsatian Choucroute Garnie.

VinOlivo: A wine and olive adventure

VinOlivo will serve up four days of wine and olive adventure on President's Day Weekend, Feb. 15-18, at participating wineries and restaurants in the Sonoma Valley.

The weekend kicks off with a Grand Tasting from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Lodge at Sonoma, featuring wine and food from the valley's top winemakers and restaurateurs. Advance tickets are $75, $85 at the door.

A flight of winemaker dinners will be offered at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at participating wineries throughout the valley. Tickets are $85. On Feb. 16 to Feb. 18, taste at the participating wineries throughout the valley. Three-day tickets are $50, one-day tickets are $25.
