Death of girl, 13, at Sonoma hospital investigated

A 13-year-old Sonoma Valley girl died Saturday night without an obvious cause and the death was being investigated Sunday by the Sonoma County Coroner's Office.

The girl apparently had been fine Saturday, prior to being found unconscious by family in their Agua Caliente apartment. They called 911 for help at 10:08 p.m.

By 10:30 p.m. she'd died shortly after arrival at Sonoma Valley Hospital and Sonoma County sheriff's deputies were alerted.

"There were no obvious signs of foul play...it didn't seem she was sickly...she wasn't claiming any kind of injury prior to this or illness," said Sonoma sheriff's Sgt. Dave Thompson Sunday. "They just found her unresponsive in her house."

Sonoma County fire emergency dispatch reports showed a Sonoma Valley ambulance arrived at the Oak Tree apartment at 10:16 p.m.

Sonoma Valley firefighters had already arrived and had begun emergency medical steps before the ambulance quickly took her to the hospital, said Mark Freeman, division chief for Sonoma Valley Fire.

She never regained consciousness.

Deputies began looking into the girl's day, trying to find a reason, Thompson said.

"That's what's being investigated now. What, if anything, could have contributed to her death. At this point we're not finding a whole lot," he said.

The case was turned over to the Coroner's Office Sunday. "We're looking into investigating it from all angles," he said.
