Fire at Kenwood winery causes minor damage

Fire broke out Wednesday morning in a gelato freezer unit at a small shop at Kenwood's VJB Vineyard & Cellars, but a sprinkler system prevented flames from spreading into the rest of the structure, fire personnel said.

Smoke and water caused some damage to the shop, located just off the tasting room of the winery near Highway 12, but there was little fire or heat damage, Kenwood Fire Capt. Daren Bellach said.

"The sprinklers went off and held the fire in check like they're supposed to," Bellach said.

It was unclear what caused the 7 a.m. fire, he said.
