A big rig hauling lumber near Willits lost more than 100 large planks early Wednesday as it headed down the Willits grade on Highway 101, reported the CHP.
Rig driver Jerry Lee Alto of Arcata was driving south when he felt the rig's load beginning to spill. As he looked in the mirror the rig drifted from the slow to the fast lane, reported CHP Officer Steve Krul.
The rig hit a railing. That caused lumber to spill across the northbound lanes.
Of the 168 pieces on the load, about two dozen remained in place.
The CHP closed the northbound lanes for 30 minutes, then opened one lane.
The second lane was closed for hours to get the wood removed, said Krul.
"It was quite an ordeal," he said, requiring fork lifts to be used to clear the heavy 12-foot planks.
No one was injured, Krul said.
As well as CHP officers, state highway workers and Mendocino County sheriff's deputies responded to the spill.
