Driver crashes on 101 after medical emergency

After fielding numerous calls reporting a wildly drunken driver on Highway 101 near Windsor on Friday, police determined he was not drunk but having a medical emergency.

Motorists traveling along 101 near the central Windsor interchange around 3:30 p.m. reported debris strewn along the highway and a car stopped in the middle of traffic.

Police approached the car with rifles drawn in what police call a "felony stop."

But CHP Officer Marcus Hawkins said officers determined the driver had possibly gone into diabetic shock or had some other kind of medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the car.

"He had just ping-ponged along," Hawkins said.

Northbound traffic halted as police approached the car. Southbound traffic slowed as drivers slowed to watch.
