Driver accused of striking sheriff's cars in Santa Rosa

An El Verano man struck two Sonoma County Sheriff's vehicles with his car early Sunday morning, a sheriff's department release reported.

Jose Manuel Javier-Lazaro, 31, was booked into the Sonoma County Jail pending charges for driving under the influence, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and felony evasion.

A sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for following too closely in the area of Highway 12 near Fulton Road, the department's report stated.

The vehicle continued eastbound on Highway 12, taking the Stony Point Road exit. The suspect vehicle then turned into the Stony Point Plaza but would not yield to the deputy's overhead lights and siren.

A second deputy arrived and a short pursuit began in the Stony Point Plaza parking lot. The suspect struck a curb, failed to yield to the deputy's lights and siren and left the lot.

Just north of Sebastopol Road, deputies were able to head off the car, which then drove forward, striking one of the vehicles. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse and struck the second deputy's car on the driver's door, the release said.
