Teen runaways arrested in Petaluma thefts

Two teens were in custody Monday after running away from a group home, stealing from cars and taking a taxi to San Francisco to buy drugs, Petaluma police officials said.

The boys, ages 16 and 17, were arrested Thursday on suspicion of the thefts, which included a wallet, cash, an iPod and other items, Lt. Tim Lyons said.

Police reported the thefts four days after their arrests and asked that neighbors near the 800 block of Bodega Avenue come forward if they suspect items were taken from additional cars.

The boys apparently ran away from a group home on Kuck Lane. After using a stolen ATM card, they took a taxi to San Francisco to buy narcotics and food, Lyons said.

They were arrested by BART police officers and brought back to Petaluma, Lyons said. They admitted to the thefts and were booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of committing theft from vehicles, using an ATM without consent and committing thefts with previous theft convictions, Lyons said.

Anyone with information about the case can call Petaluma police at 778-4375.
