A 22-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a car in his neighborhood, Santa Rosa police officials said.

Eston Meir MacMath was walking home from a bar at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday when he allegedly set the fire in what appeared to be a random act, Sgt. John Creegan said.

An officer on patrol saw a man, later identified as MacMath, running east down 12th Street away from Monroe Street at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday, Creegan said.

The officer then saw flames engulfing a 1986 Plymouth Reliant parked nearby, Creegan said. He chased after the suspect and called for police and fire backup.

Oficers found flames shooting eight feet into the air, burning a tree and licking dangerously close to a home. They evacuated nearby homes as firefighters arrived.

Fire investigators were determining how the fire started. The fire destroyed the car, leaving "nothing but the frame," Creegan said.

MacMath posted bond on $10,000 bail and was released from Sonoma County Jail.
