Santa Rosa checkpoint nets 3 DUI suspects

Santa Rosa police arrested three drivers suspected of drunken driving Saturday night in one of the periodic checkpoints set up to catch impaired drivers and check drivers' licenses.

Almost 850 vehicles passed through the checkpoint on Farmers Lane, north of Hoen Avenue.

The drivers arrested on charges of driving under the influence were Carolyn Thomas, 33, Santa Rosa; Alex Rodriguez, 38, Santa Rosa; and James Solwick, 31, Santa Rosa.

In all, 32 traffic citations were issued, five vehicles were impounded for 30 days, and 22 unlicensed drivers were arrested and cited. Eight drivers were arrested for driving on a suspended license.

The checkpoint, the third of the year for Santa Rosa police, was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Police say the goal of the checkpoints is to remove impaired drivers and increase awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
