Santa Rosa man accused of stabbing friend

A 23-year-old Santa Rosa man suffering from what appeared to be a mental disorder was arrested Monday after stabbing a friend, Santa Rosa police said.

The stabbing was reported at 1:08 p.m. on Mesquite Drive, across the street from Yulupa Elementary School, Sgt. David Linscomb said.

Aaron Aki, 36, was rushed to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery for stab wounds and lacerations to his hip, torso and face and was expected to survive, Linscomb said.

Officers found Matthew Hernandez nearby with blood on him from the assault, police said. The men live in neighboring apartments nearby.

Hernandez had been exhibiting "odd behavior" when he confronted Aki on the street, pulled out a knife and stabbed him, Linscomb said. Aki's girlfriend intervened, and Hernandez walked away through a nearby park before being arrested.

Hernandez was treated for a minor wound before being booked into the Sonoma County Jail, where he was being held Monday night on $1 million on suspicion of attempted murder.

Anyone with information about the case can call police at 543-3590.
