One dead in single-vehicle crash near Petaluma

A Novato man whose car veered off the freeway into a field just south of the Redwood Sanitary Landfill was pronounced dead at the scene Monday night.

Robert Nicholoff, 56, was found slumped over the wheel of a silver Ford Fiesta at 11:38 p.m., shortly after another motorist called to report a car careened off the northbound lanes of Highway 101 into a Novato field.

Damage to the vehicle was minimal. An emergency crew broke a window of the locked vehicle to get to the victim, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay.

Novato firefighters and the CHP could not revive him. Alcohol was not considered a factor in the incident.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, and the cause of death is pending.
