A major crash on Highway 101 Tuesday morning near Petaluma closed at least one lane of the highway for nearly five hours after a driver lost control of her 2013 Kia Optima and it flipped.

The accident occurred around 11:14 a.m. on the southbound side of 101 at Petaluma Boulevard North, said CHP Officer John Sloat.

"It rolled multiple times, and it landed on its roof with the two of them trapped inside," Sloat said.

According to the Petaluma Fire Department, one person found their way out through the broken back window and the other was extricated when the roof was cut off with hydraulic rescue tools.

The female driver, about 53 years old, and a male passenger, 29, were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, Sloat said.

Caltrans had to repair some sand-filled barrels that were destroyed in the crash, Sloat said.
