Several businesses throughout Sonoma County will offer free services and merchandise Thursday for members of the military, veterans and their families as part of Freedom Day USA.

The event is a nationwide effort to thank service members for "fighting for our freedom, protecting our country and making sacrifices we cannot even imagine," its website says.

In Sonoma County, services range from free massages to hot chocolate, veterinary services, business advice and dental services.

Businesses in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cotati and Sonoma are participating. Some services require an appointment and others are available on a walk-in basis.

Petaluma Dental Group in Petaluma, for example, is offering free cleanings, exams, fillings, extraction, sealants and more to those who provide a military identification or discharge documents. Leah Johnson of Sonoma Massage in El Verano is offering a free 15-minute chair massage.
