Highway 12 police chase ends in crash, arrest

A Santa Rosa man on a motorcycle led Sebastopol police officers on an 8-mile chase along Highway 12 that reached estimated speeds of 120 mph before he plowed into a stopped pickup in Santa Rosa on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Jebediah Scoggins, 35, was injured in the crash and was listed in fair condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police Sgt. Greg Devore said Scoggins was driving through town when he caught the eye of an officer trying to trace the sound of a whining motorcycle engine around 10:18 p.m. Wednesday.

The officer pulled Scoggins over after running his license plate and learning its owner had a suspended license and was on formal probation, Devore said.

The motorcyclist pulled over at first, but then sped east into Santa Rosa, where the highway stops abruptly at Farmers Lane. Scoggins slammed on his brakes and attempted to lay the motorcycle down when he saw the truck stopped ahead of him at a traffic light, but was unable to avoid a collision, Devore said.

Scoggins was arrested for suspected evasion, driving with a suspended license and violation of probation, but was released to the hospital for medical treatment, police said.
