Woman killed in Napa knife attack identified

A Napa woman who was stabbed to death in her Soscol Avenue home early Thursday morning has been identified as Esperanza Robledo Vega, 41, the Napa Police Department said Friday.

Vega's husband, Carlos Evert Hernandez Vega, 42, has confessed to the slaying of his wife in their apartment early Thursday morning, police said.

Authorities say he stabbed Esperanza multiple times during a domestic dispute. Police were alerted when the couple's 12-year-old daughter called 911 seeking medical help for her mother around 3:30 a.m.

The girl was in the apartment when her mother was killed, but police are still trying to determine what she saw, according to police Lt. Debbie Peecook.

Carlos Vega was still holding a knife when responding police officers encountered him a few minutes later out in front of the family's apartment, the police department said. He dropped the knife when ordered and was taken into custody, police said.

Vega is being held without bail at the Napa County Jail for suspected murder and use of a deadly weapon while committing a murder, police and jail records say.

Police are still investigating the incident and ask that anyone with information about the case contact police Detective Todd Shulman at (707) 257-9575 or tshulman@cityofnapa.org.
