A Sonoma State University student who was struck and injured last week in a northeast Rohnert Park crosswalk has been released from the hospital, where he was treated for several broken bones and other injuries, police said.

Joseph Valinoti, 18, was hit around 10 p.m. March 7 in a crosswalk in front of the Mountain Shadows Plaza shopping center on Golf Course Drive, police said. The crosswalk had no signal.

The driver of a 2005 Mazda that struck him was another SSU student, Blake Basham, 19, who was westbound on Golf Course when he hit the northbound pedestrian, Rohnert Park Public Safety Sgt. Aaron Johnson said.

Basham continued driving until he found a spot to turn around and returned to the scene as emergency personnel arrived, summoned by a witness, Johnson said.

A former Colorado resident who plays on the university golf team, Basham told authorities he hadn't seen Valinoti prior to the crash.

Johnson said police have ruled out alcohol in the case.
