A suspected drunken driver smashed into a parked Sonoma County sheriff's patrol car early Sunday, according to the CHP.

The deputy was parked on the side of a south Santa Rosa road, working at a medical call along with Rincon Valley firefighters and an AMR ambulance crew.

At about 12:20 a.m. David Santos Romanwood, 23, drove up on the scene, which included numerous emergency vehicles parked along the sides of Brooks Avenue, said CHP Officer Marcus Hawkins.

Romanwood didn't slow down and made a left turn, crashing head on into the patrol car.

Romanwood appeared to be drunk, failed sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

He was taken to the Sonoma County Jail and released after posting bail.

Hawkins didn't release details regarding damage to the patrol car. Sheriff's officials weren't available Sunday for comment.
