SURF AND SEE: Cindy and Norm Kramer of Rincon Valley are anticipating an unusual visit by their adventurous nephew from Washington State. They think we'd enjoy seeing him, too.
Devon Raney is 38 and an avid surfer, snowboarder, cyclist and sportsman. Five years ago, a surfing accident triggered the onset of a genetic disorder that stole about 85 percent of his vision.
Determined to remain as active and self-reliant as possible, and to inspire others, Raney set off Sept. 6 from home on Bainbridge Island to cycle and surf the entire Pacific Coast to Mexican border.
Seven friends take turns pedaling with him on a tandem bike. When the waves call, they unstrap the surfboards on their bike trailer and paddle out.
Raney, who's married and the father of an 8-year-old daughter, has said that when he catches a wave "it's a time that I feel the least blind."
He's scheduled to appear next week on the Humboldt County coast and to arrive Oct. 4 in Bodega Bay.
Raney details the expedition at bikesboardsblind.com.
His Aunt Cindy said, "I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of him."
JAZZ PLUS: The music of Nicolas Bearde is reason enough to consider taking in the 'Concert Under the Stars' at Montgomery Village after work on Thursday.
But folks down the block at Montgomery High are talking up the jazz man's free performance because beverage sales will bring essential dollars to Project Grad.
To help set up or pour, show up at 4.
STEPHAN PASTIS FANS should be happier than a crocodile with a new scheme for snaring his zeeba neighba.
Stephan, the Santa Rosan who creates the fabulously popular "Pearls Before Swine" comic strip, is close to releasing the sequel to his best-selling "Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made."
Candlewick Press is set to put "Timmy Failure: Now Look What You've Done" on sale on Feb. 25.
Also, Stephan will answer probing questions at a free presentation at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Santa Rosa High. And the SRHS foundation will let me lob the questions.
