Police shoot, kill man after American Canyon vehicle chase

A Friday night police chase of a male driving a white pickup ended with American Canyon police officers shooting the man dead, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

American Canyon police attempted to stop the truck at around 10 p.m., and there was a short pursuit that ended on Newell Drive in American Canyon.

Shots were fired, and the lone male occupant of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said. No officers were injured in the incident.

It was not clear who fired the first shot, how many officers opened fire or whether the man driving the pickup was armed.

Napa County Sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart said the man was not yet identified, and no further information was available.

The news release did not say why the chase began.

The incident will be investigated by the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force, which has representatives from the Napa Police Department, Napa Sheriff's Office, Calistoga Police Department and the District Attorney's Office, according to the news release.
