Bicycling tourist hit, injured on Highway 1 ride

An out-of-town visitor riding his bike on Highway 1 on the north Sonoma Coast was injured when he was sideswiped by a passing motorist late Thursday morning, the CHP said.

Long Beach resident Frederick Marsden, 57, suffered broken ribs and other injuries in the 11 a.m. crash about a half-mile north of Annapolis, the CHP said.

There were several witnesses who reported seeing Marsden hit by a southbound pickup that continued on its way in the aftermath of the collision, Officer Kerry Post said. A CHP officer in the vicinity heading northbound to the accident site caught up with the apparent driver, she said.

The officer noticed the side mirror on the truck was dangling and alerted the elderly driver, Everett Dodd, of Gualala, that he apparently had struck the bicyclist, Post said.

Dodd, 83, said he thought he'd hit a rock but was fully cooperative in the investigation, Post said.

Marsden was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, the CHP said.

An update on his condition was not immediately available Friday.
