Letter of the Day: Roads are for all users

  • Cyclist Scott Duncan takes the lead as ride leader Sarah Schroer, falls back to second in line as they pass through Downtown St. Helena on Main St. during the "Saving Daylight Century" bike ride on Sunday March 10, 2013.

Roads for all users

EDITOR: I must respond to Ray Capone ("Unsafe for cyclists," Letters, Thursday). The roadways are public domain, paid for by all of us.

The majority of cyclists own cars, have jobs and pay taxes. Cyclists have a codified right to use any road, regardless of shoulder or road configuration (even freeways are allowed if no other route is available). All road users have the obligation to know and follow the rules of the road.

The real problems of bike/car interface occur when the Vehicle Code is not obeyed. This applies to cyclists and drivers. The best way to make the roads safe for all users is to give full attention to the task at hand while riding or driving.
