PC: Veronica Ferguson, the new chief administrator of Sonoma County.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors is granting Veronica Ferguson a three-year extension in her contract as the county's top administrator.

Ferguson, 56, has served in the post for three years after leaving Solano County, where she worked as an assistant administrator in Solano County. She was hired after the surprise resignation of Bob Deis, the former Sonoma County administrator, who hit a rough patch with the 2009 board after confronting employee unions and retirees over limiting health benefits.

The county has recently begun to increase some of those benefits for employees while seeking to rein in rising pension costs.

Ferguson's new contract, up for approval by the board on its consent calendar Tuesday, will extend her tenure through March 26, 2016.

The move maintains her current annual salary of $235,010.

She is the highest-compensated local government employee in Sonoma County. Her regular pay in 2012 was $203,040. Including holiday, sick and vacation time and cashouts of accrued leave, plus car and cash allowances, her total pay was $262,085. Her benefits package was worth $109,827.
