Wildfire burns two structures near Lake County-Mendocino County border

A wildfire destroyed two buildings and swept through 100 acres over the weekend near the Highland Springs Reservoir at the Lake-Mendocino county border, fire officials said.

The blaze started just before 2 p.m. Saturday off Highland Springs Road west of Kelseyville, and in about two hours spread to about 100 acres, according to Cal Fire officials.

Two structures were destroyed in the fire that burned through "very steep grass oak woodland and timber," Cal Fire Capt. Emily Smith said.

The fire was contained at 98 acres by 6 p.m. Sunday.

Clouds that rolled in Sunday greatly aided the firefight, bringing cooler weather and perhaps some slight precipitation, Smith said.

Crews planned to remain overnight and continue to douse hot spots and monitor the area through Monday.

"They're making sure there's a line completely around the fire. Then it's just a matter of mopping it up," Smith said.
