Letter of the Day: A courthouse for the square

  • 1900s

Sonoma County Courthouse - downtown Santa Rosa

A courthouse for the square

EDITOR: If the people of Santa Rosa really want to right a terrible wrong and reunify Old Courthouse Square, I have an idea: Find an architect to design a building that looks like the old courthouse on the outside, and on the inside would be a performing arts center. There could be underground parking underneath the building.

I'm one of those people who believes that the old courthouse should never have been demolished. It should have been repaired. It would have cost less to do that than to put in the cobblestone street and to plant the current landscaping, which is going to be ripped out and planted again.

Before anything gets done, let's stop for a minute and think about what would be best for the citizens of Santa Rosa and not just for the powers that be. I'm a third-generation native Santa Rosan, and I miss the old courthouse and the Carnegie library.
